Weakness: cheap plastic body. no spot meter

This camera is outstanding but its 18-55 lens kinda crappy. It takes great pictures, and the controls are easy to use and laid out perfectly. Start-up time is instant.better buy a good lens such as 75-200 L f/4.0.

The Canon Digital Rebel XT is a great camera. I have some experience with low-end and high-end digital cameras and I've been impressed with the simplicity of controls and the quality of this camera. I compared it with Nikons, Konica/Minoltas and others before purchasing. The features and picture quality was much better in my opinion for the Digital Rebel XT. I have the standard "kit" version with the standard zoom lense, which I find sufficient for the various types of photos I take. I also purchased a 1gig flashmemory card, (non-microdrive for speed) and find that even at the highest quality, largest picture size, I get almost 300 pictures on the card. For me at least, that's plenty for any outing. If you turn the quality down you'll get more photos than you can count and will still have plenty of pixils to work with!
It was also nice to purchase the camera on Pricegrabber.com and see it at the mall a few days later for more than $300 more!
This is a great universal camera, great for ameteurs yet powerful enough for professionals.

The size and weight of the camera is another reason attract me. I feel very comfortable holding the camera( I have tried Canon 20D and Nikon D70, they both are good DSLR but I don't feel the same comforts as XT, probably due to my small hand)
I have not played with the photo studio software that came with the camera. Hopefully, it is as easy as using XT.

Weakness: the standard lens (18-55 mm) is very good but loses some sharpness at 55 mm in low contrast focusing.

This is a great camera. I loved my EOS 630 but, as I went digital, I opted for the Canon S400 Digital Elph (an amazing camera for such small size)because the SLR's were too heavy and too expensive. The XT hits the sweet spot. Fast shooting,smart features (many updated from the EOS world) and compact size are a huge plus. Although I like the included 18-55mm lens, I wish I had bought body only and then popped for the extra cost ($500+) for an EF 17-85mm IS USM lens. However, if you just want a great digital SLR that is an amazing value, get this with the included lens and use the power of 8 megapixels to crop and blow up your photo to create the same effect as a telephoto

Along with the 0.2 second startup, you won't miss any photo moment. The burst mode can shoot 3 frames per second. In my test, it captured 24 shots before slowing down. The battery life is good too. I'm still on my first charge after a few hundred shots with many on flash. The true USB2 is nice, I don't have to take the CF out to transfer large amount of pictures.
One thing Canon may fix with firmware is that the menu items are dimmed when they are not active. It makes them difficult to see under bright light. Once you get familiar with the menus, it won't be too bad.
